This March, I am running, cycling, hiking and swimming over 210kms and I would love your support!

I am proud to be supporting the Ronald McDonald House® with their House to House challenge this March and are getting active to help keep families together at the RMHC® NZ when they need it most.

With families travelling on average 210km from their home to a RMHC® NZ for treatment, the House to House challenge is helping raise vital funds to help the RMHC® NZ care for families when their child is receiving hospital care.

I am challenging myself to complete 210km in March and raise $1,197 which will help one family stay in the RMH for a month. This fantastic charity is one which is close to my heart, as my family received the massive benefits of the RMH when my wife, Jessica, went into early labour in 2021.

We were rushed around the country and ended up in the NICU unit in Wellington as Jessica's waters had broken at 32 weeks. Within days of arriving, Jessica went into labour and a touch and go situation of a premature birth and a serious risk to both babies and mother's life began

Thankfully, Hugo was born safely through the skilled hands of the NICU team. We remained in NICU and in the care of RMHC for the next week or so as Hugo adapted to the real world.

The team and the volunteers at RMHC were amazing. Having a home (for free) across the road from the hospital meant I could stay close to my precious family and even flew our daughter and Jessica's mother to meet Hugo and be close to us.

Having the free accommodation so close took so much stress out of our scary situation. I also met and connected with other families going through the same hardship. Sadly, some were not so lucky to have their beautiful children survive. The cost would have been massive to stay all that time and stress of having to find somewhere to stay was taken away and we are forever thankful.

What do the Ronald McDonald House® do?

The Ronald McDonald House® supports families when their child is in hospital away from home, taking care of the practical things in life so families can focus on supporting their child.

This helps to relieve stresses like paying for a place to sleep near the hospital, organising family meals and needing a friendly ear to listen on tough days.

Each year The Ronald McDonald House® offers over 3,500 families across New Zealand accommodation and support free of charge.

Simply put, they give families with a hospitalised child what they need most – each other.
